This is a continuation of Part One. Some of the information in this part will be a repeat of what was already in part one. Yet, there is some information added to what was in part one. Therefore it would be helpful to read what is in part one first for a better understanding of this subject of "The Earnest of the Spirit"

In Ephesians 1:13,14 it says, "In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise...Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory."

What are the Scriptures talking about when it says, "...hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit?" The Word "earnest" means "a pledge; a part of the purchase money or property given in advance as security for the rest." The security is only a pledge, based upon a continuance until the full payment is made. If the full payment is not made the security pledge is lost. All is lost, the earnest as well as the possession.

Then in Ephesians 4:30 it says, "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." When is the day of redemption? The day of redemption is when those who are faithful will receive their full redemption. Those who are not faithful may lose their redemption.

Satan has blinded the minds of many Christians with his teaching of eternal security. Satan has teachings that cause many to think that once they are saved they are sealed forever, and already have a guarantee that they will spend eternity in heaven. If that were true, then most of the New Testament is false.

the Earnest of the Spirit

We are living in the time of the New Covenant, which is "established upon better promises" than the Old Covenant (Heb. 8:6). When it speaks of the Old Covenant in Hebrews 8:6 it is not speaking of the Old Testament, even though the word Covenant and Testament have the same meaning. The Old Testament begins in Genesis 1:1 and continues through Malachi.

The Old Covenant is actually the Covenant of the Law, sometimes called the Law of Moses. The Law of Moses was a covenant given to the twelve tribes of Israel. It began after the Children of Israel left Egypt and entered into the wilderness.

The New Covenant we have replaces the Old Covenant of the Law. It is "established upon better promises" than the Old Covenant of the Law of Moses. Grace is a major part of the New Covenant. In John 1:17 it says, "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ."

One of the things in the New Covenant that is very important is "the earnest of the Spirit," which is given by grace to all who are born again, and receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. This was already promised in the Old Testament when it said, "Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts...For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little...For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people" (Isa. 28:9-11).

Then in Galatians 3:13 it says, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree...That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith."

By grace we receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit through faith. It was already promised in Abraham, but was not available until after Jesus died and arose again from the dead. Yet, this promise is only to those who are born again into the body of Christ.

This promise is not limited to the promises of the Law of Moses, which was only for the Children of Israel and those who would receive the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as their God. The Law of Moses was not given to other nations, only to the Children of Israel.

But, by grace through faith, the New Covenant is for all nations and people who will receive Jesus Christ as their LORD and Savior. Following the New Birth, the blessing of Abraham, which is "the earnest of the Spirit" is given by grace to all who will receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

Jesus was speaking of what was already written in the Scriptures when He said, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God..." (John 6:45). Notice, in Isaiah 28:11, it is "...with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people." Then in 1 John 2:27 it says, "But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him."

Satan does everything he can and uses every person he can to keep Christians from receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Satan also does all he can to keep Christians from speaking in tongues after they receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a major part of the New Covenant that many have ignored. Because of a lack of knowledge, many have been destroyed. This was also spoken of in Hosea 4:6, saying, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children."

Hosea 4:6 is a prophecy that included all of God's people, those of the Children of Israel as well as born again Christians. Because of many teachings of men in the Churches today, multitudes of Christians are being deceived by a lack of knowledge. Many have rejected knowledge when they refused to first receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and then again when they refuse to speak in tongues and pray in the Spirit.

In 1 Corinthians 14:2 it says, "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." How can God teach us all things, if we do not obey the LORD and do what we are told to do in the Scriptures?

The Earnest of the Spirit

Part Two

Anyone who is born of the Spirit and the Word of God, and are still here on earth can have the earnest of the Holy Spirit. Even Jesus, while He was here on earth as the Son of God and the Son of Man, was given the earnest of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was about thirty years of age He received the Holy Spirit following His baptism in water by John the Baptist. That day, Jesus received the earnest of the Holy Spirit until His resurrection from the dead.

Jesus was tempted in every manner by the Devil. Every temptation was the Devil trying and testing His obedience to the Father. Had Jesus disobeyed the Father at anytime He would have failed to obtain unto the resurrection of the dead. Jesus did not fail to do the will of God in His life here on earth. Therefore, Jesus did obtain unto the resurrection of the dead (Phil. 3:9-11).

Acts 10:38 says, "God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him."

The Holy Spirit was given to Jesus to enable Him to do the will of God, "not by His own power," but by "the earnest of the Spirit" which He received from the Father.

Jesus said in John 5:30, "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."

Jesus was the Son of God, born of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Jesus was also the Son of Man, born of the virgin Mary, with a physical body the same as any other human being upon this earth.

Even being, the Son of God and the Son of Man, Jesus still could not do anything of His own ability. Jesus needed "the anointing of the Holy Spirit" to enable Him to do the will of God. Everything Jesus did in the ministry was done by the anointing of the Holy Spirit, the same way it is to be done by all Christians.

It was prophesied in Zechariah 4:6, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." Therefore, Ephesians 2:8 says, " grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God." By the earnest of the Spirit which was given to Jesus, He was saved by grace through faith. Jesus is our example to follow, that we also might be saved by grace through faith.

Eternal salvation is for those who obey the LORD. In Hebrews 5:9 it says, "And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him." It does not say "to them that disobey Him." Faith, without works is dead. Can dead faith save anyone?

By "the grace of God," the blood of Jesus Christ was shed for the remission of sins, until the day of redemption "for those who obey Him." The Blood of Jesus is the seal of an everlasting covenant (Heb. 13:20,21). But, the covenant has two parts, God's part and man's part.

Not everyone will enter into heaven by the blood of the Lamb. Only those who believe the Gospel, and "obey the LORD." Those who do not believe and do not obey may lose their inheritance.

The Blood was shed for the whole world (1 John 2:2). Yet, the Blood is only effective for those who believe the Gospel. Those who truly believe will receive their reward "by faith," not "by works." Yet, faith without works is dead (James 2:17).

Grace and faith are gifts of God to those who will believe (Eph. 2:8). Salvation is not of ourselves. Yet, it is not without faith either. Without faith, we cannot be saved. Eternal salvation is for those who obey the LORD (Heb. 5:9).

In 1 Timothy 4:1, it says, "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." We must be careful of those who "...depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils."

The Anointing

Part Two

The anointing is the power of the Holy Spirit to enable someone to do the perfect will of God. Therefore, it is the Holy Spirit Himself, working in and through an individual to accomplish the will of God here on earth. In Philippians 2:13 it says, "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure." God is not working in an individual to help them do their own pleasure, or their own will.

The anointing, and the individual who has the anointing are two separate things. The anointing is one thing and the individual is another thing. Satan has given many the idea that because they have an anointing they are special to God, and special above others within the Body of Christ. That is a lying spirit, sent by Satan to cause those who believe the lie to destroy themselves.

We must not be ignorant of Satan's devices. Satan works through the minds, and the intellect of individuals. Satan puts thoughts in the minds of people, to get them to become like he is.

In the very beginning, Satan was an archangel (an anointed cherub). In Ezekiel 28:14 it says, "Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth..." Satan was in the heavens before the throne of God. God created the Devil as he was, with the anointing to do the will of God, God's way. Ezekiel 28:15 says, "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee."

What was the Devils downfall? The first thing is mentioned in Ezekiel 28:17, saying, "Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness..." The Devil thought that he was someone better than others because of his position, his beauty and the anointing.

The second thing was that he sealed up the plan of God for himself, and wanted to do his own will, rather than the will of God (Ezek. 28:12). These two things could cause many people to also be cast down to hell for all eternity.

The anointing is not for our glory. It is so that we can do the perfect will of God while we are here on earth. It is not our anointing, it is God's anointing. It does not belong to us. It is given to us so that God can work through us to do His will. Anyone who thinks that because of the anointing they are special in any way. have been deceived by Satan himself. It never was that way, and never will be that way.

The third thing that Lucifer (now called Satan the Devil) did was he decided "not to do the will of God," God's way, but to do "his own will," his own way. That was Satan's greatest mistake. Once Satan tried to do that, he was cast out of the third heavens and hell become his final place for all eternity.

If anyone thinks that they can do their own will here on earth and God will accept it is greatly mistaken. God will not permit anyone, no matter who they are, to do their own will and enter into heaven.

Anyone can do their own will, for they have a free will. But, the idea of doing their own will, could place them in a position where they could spend eternity in hell with the Devil and his followers.

This is God's creation. God will do His will, His way (Isa. 46:9,10). God is not going to change (Mal. 3:6). Therefore, those who have followed the example of Satan, need to repent. They need to repent, and do only the will of God if they want to obtain unto the resurrection of the dead and spend eternity in heaven.

When someone who receives the true anointing thinks they are better than someone else, they are already on the wrong road. They are entering by the wrong gate. Jesus said in Matthew 7:13,14, "Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat...Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it."

Therefore, if they would study the Scriptures, they would know that is the same thing that Lucifer, (now called Satan the Devil did). If anyone follows the same path that Lucifer took, they will most likely end up in the same position as the Devil.

The temptations of the Devil are everywhere. We must resist the temptations of the Devil to follow the perfect plan of God for our lives.

Those who take titles upon themselves and use them for their glory are in dangerous territory. They need to repent while they still can. For there are many who will not be able to repent, if they wait too long. For it says, in James 4:6, "...God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble." There are many places in the Scriptures that tell us, it may not be possible for many to repent if they wait too long. In Romans 1:18-31 it speaks of Christians, that the wrath of God will come upon them. In Romans 1:21 it says, "Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened." In Romans 1:28 it says, "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient." Once God gives a Christian over to a reprobate mind, it may not be possible for them to repent.

Taking titles and glory and honor for the anointing is dangerous. What applied to Jesus applies to everyone. In Hebrews 5:4,5, it says, "And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron...So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee."

Titles in the ministry must be given by God, not by man. Men who receive titles in the ministry and do not have the true anointing are in great danger, to say the least. No man can glory in the anointing, for the anointing is God's anointing, and it belongs to God and not to any man.

All of the anointings and positions in the Body of Christ are placed there by the Holy Spirit. The fivefold ministry gifts are placed into the Body of Christ by the LORD (Eph. 4:10-16). Then they are put into position and controlled by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:7-30).

All of the anointings and gifts of the Spirit are as the Holy Spirit wills, not as man wills. It says in 1 Corinthians 12:11 it says, "But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

The only gift of the Spirit that operates according to our wills is "praying in the Spirit." In 1 Corinthians 14:14,15 it says, "For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful...What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

Sometimes there is a misunderstanding of the difference between speaking in tongues and praying in the Spirit. Speaking in tongues is when the Holy Spirit gives the utterance. Many times the operation of "speaking in tongues" needs to be interpreted by the gift of interpretation of tongues. Therefore, "speaking in tongues" is usually a ministry gift, to minister to others by the anointing. It is basically the same as prophesying with the exception that it needs to be interpreted. Speaking in tongues as a ministry gift, can also involve speaking in another language unknown by the one doing the speaking. In that case, it does not need to be interpreted for those who hear what is said in their own language.

Praying in the Spirit is for the edification and building up of the faith of the persons who is doing the praying. That is a personal gift, received at the time of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Being a personal gift to the person who prays in the Spirit, it will operate at anytime the person so desires. Therefore, it says, "What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also" (1 Cor. 14:15).

Praying in the Spirit is the only gift of the Spirit given to an individual whereby they control when they pray and when they stop praying. All of the other gifts are under the control of the Holy Spirit Himself.

Any operation of any of the other gifts of the Spirit where the individual operates whenever he wishes is very questionable, to say the least. Many of the gifts of the Spirit have been corrupted by the spirits of this world, working under the direction of Satan Himself.

One of the major identifying marks of a false operation of the gifts of the Spirit is, "does it exhort an individual or exalt an individual?" God never exalts an individual. God does exhort individuals.

In Matthew 23:12, Jesus said, "And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted." In 1 Peter 5:6, it says, "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time."

Some believe in the transferring of the anointing from one individual to another. Therefore they lay hands upon others to receive the same anointing. This is sometimes done. But, many times it is a counterfeit anointing.

Anointings can be transferred from one person to another. In the Spiritual realm, that is how demon spirits receive their power. These satanic counterfeit anointings are transferred from one spirit to another. Therefore, the anointing that Satan has is transferred to other spirits. When we speak to Satan in commanding spirits to depart, we are speaking to a spirit that has the same anointing of Satan.

Satan is not omnipresent (in all places at the same time). The anointing that Satan has is transferred to other demonic spirits and they operate in the same anointing.

It would be much better for Christians if they would stay with the inspired written Word of God and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will reveal to them what is of God and what is not of God. Basically, the true anointings are given by the Holy Spirit, Himself, without the laying on of hands. If anyone is to receive an anointing by the laying on of hands, it should only be by a clear inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Laying on of hands is used to help someone receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. But the laying on of hands for that purpose is not the transferring of the Holy Spirit from one person to the other. Only God the Father and Jesus Christ can baptize someone with the Holy Spirit. It cannot be done by the will of man or the transferring of the Holy Spirit from one person to another.

The anointing that is in one person is not normally transferred to another person. It is the anointing of the Holy Spirit within one person that will destroy the works of the Devil in another person. That is the main purpose for laying on of hands, to destroy the works of the Devil by the power of the anointing within someone who has the anointing within them.

There are a few examples, that look like the true anointing was transferred from one person to another, therefore we need the Holy Spirit to help and guide us to know what is of God and what is not of God. Generally, all anointings come from the LORD, by way of the Holy Spirit. These come directly from God, and not by the laying on of hands.

The apostles laid hands upon six men chosen by the members of the Church as they set them in the position of overseeing the distribution to those in need in Acts 6:5,6. It does not say these six received any anointing by the apostles laying their hands upon them. Yet, had there been any demonic spirits working in these six, the anointing on the apostles could have destroyed the works of darkness in them.

When the true anointing is working in an individual by laying on of hands, the individual will know if there is an evil spirit present. Many times, it will be a vibration caused by the anointing coming against the evil spirit within an individual.

Keep in mind, all true anointings come from God, as God wills, not from men as men desire. Many Christians are looking for the anointing they see upon another Christian and think they can receive the same anointing by having hands laid upon them. That is usually the flesh, desiring to receive something that God may not have planned for their lives. That is dangerous, to say the least.

God calls and God anoints those He has chosen. We do not need false anointings transferring from one person to another. We need the true anointings within the Body of Christ.

One of the greatest of all false anointings is a familiar spirit, operating in the position of giving out information concerning a persons past, present, and future. Familiar spirit know the past and present lives of individuals. But they do not control the future unless the person receiving their false operations permits them to. Just because someone knows things that only you know, that does not mean the information came from the Holy Spirit. Familiar spirits also know these things. They have been around that person all their lives. They know what happened in the past, even better than the person themselves.

The Importance of

the Earnest of the Spirit

As born again Children of God, we enter into a whole new way of living. Everything that is done in our lives must be by the ability that God gives us. Of our own ability, we cannot please God. That is why it says, "The just shall live by faith" (Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:38).

Faith is a gift from God, to enable us to believe in, trust in, and rely upon God for everything we have need of. When we try to supply our own needs by our own ability, God is not pleased. God has given us "the Earnest of the Spirit" to enable us to do His will by His anointing within us.

We have been given God's Word, His Holy Spirit, and the Blood of Jesus to live on this earth according to the will of God the Father. Even Jesus needed the written Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and the Blood to do the will of God the Father. Jesus knew what the Scriptures had already revealed before He went to the Cross. Jesus knew the total plan of God the Father for His life here on earth. Jesus knew it was His blood that would satisfy the requirements of the Father, that we could became born again and become true Children of God.

True Children of God are "new creatures in Christ Jesus." They are no longer in Adam (the flesh), but in Christ Jesus (the Spirit) (Rom. 8:9). As true Children of God, we are able to enter into the heavens and spend eternity with God.

Everyone who is truly born again of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God are directly related to God the Father. The very life of God the Father flows through the Son into everyone who is in Christ.

God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit have the same life within them. They do not have individual lives of their own. It is the very life of God the Father that lives in the Son and the Holy Spirit. Therefore, these three are One (1 John 5:7). As Children of God, the very life within us is joined to God by His life flowing through us.

It is the life of God the Father that keeps everything working together in all of creation. The life of God the Father keeps the Godhead in operation. Therefore, it is the life of God the Father that enables us to live in the spiritual realm in the heavens.

God is Love (agape). Without the love of God flowing in us and through us we cannot continue and obtain our inheritance in the heavens. It is only by the very life of God and the love of God that we exist today. Our existence started from the Father, through the Son, by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. This must be maintained by "the Earnest of the Spirit," which is given to us to do the will of God here on earth.

Lucifer (now the Devil), had the anointing to do the will of God. Lucifer did not obey God, and therefore he will spend eternity in hell. Let us not follow His example.
