When Jesus called His disciples, many times He said to them "Follow Me." In Matthew 4:18,19 it says, "And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers....And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
Did you notice that one of them was Simon Peter. Have you noticed what happened to Peter as he continued to follow Jesus? Did you know that if you will "Follow Jesus," the same things can happen in your life?
God is not a respecter of persons. What the LORD did in Peter's life, He can do in your life also. You can walk with God the same as Peter walked with God. God has a plan for your life. If you will "Follow Jesus," God will fulfill His plan in your life also.
Peter is one of many people who "Followed Jesus." You can be another one in your lifetime. You also can "Follow Jesus." There are no limits when you "Follow Jesus." The supernatural can become the natural for those who "Follow Jesus."
Peter walked on water, and so can you (Matt. 14:29). In Acts 5:19 and Acts 12:7-11, an angel released Peter from prison. God can send an angel to do the same for you.
People were healed as Peter walked by (Acts 5:15), The same can happen to you. People were raised from the dead as Peter prayed for them (Acts 9:40). The same can happen for you.
When you "Follow Jesus," Satan has no power over you. All the powers of heaven are working for you when you follow Jesus. You can walk in power when you "Follow Jesus."
Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." If we believe the Word of God, and believe Jesus, He will do the same things in our lives as He did in Peter's life.
God has not changed. God will never change. God's Word has not changed. Therefore, if we change and "Follow Jesus," we can also do the same things Jesus did and the same things Peter did. Jesus cannot lie.
Jesus said in John 14:12, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Are you ready to "Follow Jesus"?
Too often, Christians read their Bibles from "the wrong" point of view. Too often, Christians let others tell them what the Bible says according to their idea of what it says. This has been the case for years and years.
There are many things written in our Bibles that could hinder us from following Jesus if we do not understand the Word of God. Even looking at the Bible from Genesis through Revelation it is easy to get "the wrong view" of God and His Word.
Let me give you an example of "the wrong view" of God's Word. When Jesus came preaching the Gospel, the Scribes, the Pharisees, and the Sadducees came against Jesus. The reason they did was they had a wrong view of the Word of God.
The Apostle Paul was a Pharisee in the beginning. Paul had a "wrong view" of God's Word in the beginning. After Jesus revealed Himself to Paul on his way to Damascus in Acts 9:3-6, the Apostle Paul had a "right view" of God's Word. That "right view" of God's Word is mentioned in Acts 13:38,39. The Apostle Paul said, "Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins:...And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses."
The law cannot justify anyone. But if we "Follow Jesus," we will be justified from all things. But, to be justified from all things we must "Follow Jesus."
In our lives, many things happen. Many times we get into situations that seem impossible for us. Many Christians have given up when they could have been set free, had they followed Jesus. Jesus did not come to condemn people. He came to set us free of all condemnation. Jesus promised those who follow Him "an abundant life."
In John 10:10,11, Jesus said "...I am come that they might have life (zoe), and that they might have it more abundantly....I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life (psuche) for the sheep." Jesus had (zoe) life in Himself. In John 1:4, talking about Jesus it says, "In him was life (zoe); and the life (zoe) was the light of men." Jesus said, He came that we could have (zoe) life within ourselves also.
There are a number of Greek words in the New Testament translated as "life" in English Bibles. But they do not all mean the same thing. If we do not understand the difference between them, we could get the "wrong idea" of what the Bible is saying.
In John 10:10 the word "life" in the Greek is "zoe." In John 10:11, the Greek word for life is "psuche." There is as much difference between these two words, as there is between "light and darkness." In John 1:4 it compares zoe (life) with light. Darkness is not light and light is not darkness. Light puts out darkness... Darkness cannot stop light. When a light is turned on, the darkness must go, it cannot stay in the light.
This is the same with the Greek words "zoe" and "psuche." When "zoe" comes, the "psuche" must go. "Zoe" replaces "psuche." How many Christians today are still confused and trying to "Follow Jesus," while still walking in the dark (in "psuche")?
You can have this "abundant life" if you want it. It is free to all who will "Follow Jesus." Most Christians miss having "an abundant life" by their idea of what Jesus was talking about. They still think the way the world thinks, not understanding what Jesus was talking about in John 10:10.
Let me give you a few examples of the abundant life Jesus was talking about. I knew a brother in the LORD who for many years was a born again Christian. He lived a good life in the natural, like most of the Christians today. But he was not always led by the Holy Spirit in the things that he did.
After we met, I spent many hours talking to this brother in the LORD, and he spent many hours studying his Bible and reading the books I was writing. Within a short time he realized he needed the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues (Acts 1:4,5,8; 2:4, etc.). Once he received the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking tongues things started happening in his life that helped him greatly.
There are many examples of things that happened in this brother in the LORD's life following the baptism in the Holy Spirit. But at this time I would like to mention one that shows how important it is to be led by the Holy Spirit in our daily lives.
For years this brother in the LORD had a physical problem in which the doctors could not find the answer. At times, he would get a cramp in his leg, between his knee and hip. If he did not do something when it came upon him he would sometimes pass out. One time he passed out while in his bedroom and he fell, hitting a dresser. As he fell and hit the dresser he broke one of his ribs. Another time he was in the bathroom and he passed out, falling and hitting his head on the shower door. His wife came in and found him on the floor with his head bleeding.
The doctors could not find the answer as to why this was happening. Over the years he found out that it would help sometimes if he put some ointment on his leg when he got a cramp in his leg. By this, they always kept some ointment in the bathroom, on the counter, just so he could quickly put some on if he would start to feel the cramp coming on.
It was only a short time after he received the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues that he was in the bathroom one morning and the cramp came. He called his wife and she came in praying.
At the time this happened, the first thing his wife asked was if she should get him some ointment for his leg? Unknown to him at the time, the Holy Spirit helped him. And he said to his wife, "No, the LORD is healing me now, I don't need the ointment." When he made a firm stand that "the LORD was his healer," and he refused the ointment, he said a warmth came over his whole body, the cramp went away, and he was healed.
What he did not realize at the time was the thought to refuse the ointment and confess that the LORD was healing him came from his spirit, where the Holy Spirit dwells.
Our mind receives thoughts from our spirit. As quickly as the thought comes from our spirit we speak it out of our mouth. It is so fast that it is hard to tell the difference between our thoughts and the thoughts the Holy Spirit brings to our mind.
Many times we end up speaking just as fast as the thoughts come to our mind. It is an immediate response between our spirit and our mind. But, the wonderful part is that it is God working in our lives for our benefit. God is working all things together for our good (Rom. 8:28).
When people are walking in the natural they do things the way the world does things. They go to the doctor to find out what the doctor says they should do? They listen to their doctor and believe the doctor can help them. But, in the Spirit, having fellowship with God, praying in tongues and studying the Word, the Holy Spirit helps, guides, comforts, leads, and teaches us the ways of God (living in the Spirit by the life of God within us).
Zoe (life) within us operates from our spirit, and we know and do things differently then the world does things. Sometimes the Holy Spirit puts words in our mouth before we even know what we are going to say. We hear ourselves saying things without planning on saying what we say. Before we know it, God has done a great work in our lives and then we begin to realize what happened.
As quickly as this brother in the LORD said, "No, the LORD is healing me now, I don't need the ointment," the power of God went through his body and he was healed. Now, the doctors tried to help this brother in the LORD over the years. But they could not find the answer to prevent this condition from happening. But the LORD knows the answer to all our problems, and by the power of the Holy Spirit working in us and through us we can be healed.
There is a difference between the way the world does things and the way the LORD, working through the Holy Spirit does things. It is the difference between walking after the flesh or walking after the Spirit. It is the difference between "psuche" and "zoe." That is, the difference between natural life and spiritual life. The spiritual life of God has power over the natural life of man.
The "abundant life" is a life being led by the Holy Spirit, and walking in the supernatural rather than the natural. That is the way Jesus walked. That is the "abundant life" Jesus was speaking of in John 10:10. We do not need to be conformed to this world (Rom. 12:2). We can be transformed by renewing our mind on the Word of God, so that the Holy Spirit can operate in our lives by His power.
Let me give another example of the "abundant life" (zoe), that Jesus was speaking of in John 10:10. A sister in the LORD was visiting her son in the winter months here in Wisconsin. They were walking on the sidewalk when she slipped and fell. In the fall she injured her hip. She had pain, but at first did not go to a doctor. She was believing God for her healing.
A few days later her daughter talked her into going to the hospital and have it checked out. They took x-rays and told her she had a hairline fracture in one of her bones. They gave her medication for pain and at first told her to rest and not do anymore walking than necessary.
As the days continued, the pain keep coming and her leg turned black and blue from her knee all the way up into her hip. Her leg was also getting stiff. Then the doctors told her she needed to get therapy on her leg, otherwise she would have a stiff leg the rest of her life.
A few days later, she was at my house, with a stiff leg and pain. I told her that she needed to get into the Word of God and get healed by the Word of God. She and I spent less then a half-hour in the Word of God. I explained some things to her about faith. Then I left for a short time. When I came back I saw her bending her leg as she was putting some food in her pet's dish. There she was, "healed by the Word of God." The doctors could not do it. But "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:26).
I was surprised myself, seeing her there bending down. She had a stiff leg for days, and it was still stiff when I left her only about an half hour before.
What happened? The Holy Spirit helped her. He confirmed the Word of God by healing her leg when she believed. When (in her spirit), she knew she was healed, she got up and walked into the other room and bent down and put some food in her pet's dish. That thought did not come from her mind. It came "to her mind" from her spirit where the Holy Spirit dwells. That is not the way the world does things.
The doctors did what they could. But their advice was to get some therapy on her leg so it would not remain stiff the rest of her life. But in the "abundant life" that Jesus was talking of, we do not need do to things the way the world does things. We can receive healing by the power of God working in our lives.
God works from our spirit. The world works from their mind. Once God is working from our spirit and we learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit, we can have "...righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost" (Rom. 14:17). We can live in health and not spend all our time and money looking for healing and health for our bodies the way the world does.
The world lives according to what they know in the natural, operating from their mind which is in their head. But, Christians can live above the worlds system and operate from their spirit, being led by the Holy Spirit. That is the way Jesus lived and He said, we can live like He lived and do the things He did also (John14:12).
The abundant life is not only that we can walk in health. It is for every part of our lives here on earth as well as in heaven. In the worlds system, people go to schools, colleges, and places to learn how to do things. They study books and have teachers to teach and train them in the type of work they will be doing.
In my lifetime, there was a time when I knew in my spirit that the LORD wanted me to start printing the books I was writing. I didn't know anything about running a printing press, or getting things set up for printing. All I knew was that the LORD wanted me to purchase a printing press and start printing books.
I bought a used tabletop printing press and a few other items to print the books I was writing. I did not go to school to learn how to run a printing press. I did not take any courses or even buy any books to study up on how to run a printing press. I had never worked in a print shop, or even known anyone who was a printer.
I bought the used tabletop printing press, ink, chemicals, paper, and supplies I needed. Once in a while I would ask someone who knew things about the printing industry where I could get certain items for the printing I was doing.
In most cases, when I began to do things with the printing equipment I had purchased, I knew what to do without asking anyone anything. The knowledge and understanding came to me as I needed to know what to do.
Sometimes things just did not seem to work the way I thought they should. Then I would pray and ask the LORD, what should I do? I recall one time when I was using paper plates to print with and the ink was building up on the plate. The fountain solution would not keep the plate clean. At that time I was using a mixture of one part fountain solution and fourteen parts water. The fountain solution was a yellowish color.
I could not get the fountain solution to keep the plate clean. I said to my two sons, "You two come and help me pray in the Spirit." Then I told them that I couldn't get the fountain solution to keep the plate clean. We prayed in the Spirit for sometime when I noticed the fountain solution turned from a yellowish color to a greenish color. I then said to my two boys, "We have the answer, the LORD just changed the color of the fountain solution so I would know our prayer is answered."
I then started up the printing press again and everything worked great. I did a lot of printing that day with no problems with the fountain solution. Even after adding more fountain solution (the color of the added solution was yellowish and the fountain solution in the printing press turned back to a yellowish color), but I did not have any problem with ink buildup on the paper plates.
The LORD knows everything. There is nothing that the LORD does not know. He has sent the Holy Spirit to be our helper, guide, teacher, comforter and to led us "in everything we do."
God is interested in every area of our lives. God has supernatural wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. If we need to know something, the Holy Spirit can reveal it to us.
The "abundant life" is living and doing things in this world by the wisdom, knowledge, and understanding given to us by God. God is for us, not against us. God will give us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding anytime we need it.
Sometimes we need to ask God for help. Sometimes we just need to simply pray in the Spirit and God helps us do what we could not do in the natural. Sometimes, the LORD does things in our lives without us even asking. The "abundant life" is having all our needs supplied (that we have what we need when we need it).
Christians need to study their Bibles, and check in the Greek and Hebrew to see if what they believe agrees with what God said? The English language does not have words equivalent to "zoe and psuche." Therefore, in the English Bibles these two words are simply translated as "life."
When we get the "right view" of what God said, then we can "Follow Jesus" and walk in the light of God's Word. Psalm 119:105 says, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path." In 1 John 1:5-7 it says, "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all...If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:...But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
In Psalm 119:105 and 1 John 1:5-7, it is talking about the Word of God, not the light of the sun. The light of the sun makes it possible for us to walk and see with our natural eyes where we are walking. The light of the Word of God shows us how to live in this life without being subject to the darkness of the world and the works of the devil. By not being subject to the world, it means "we can live in the supernatural rather then the natural." Jesus walked in the supernatural and did not rely upon the natural to control what He said and did.
This same principle of light and darkness applies to the Greek words "zoe" and "psuche." If we walk in "zoe" we can live above the circumstances in our lives. "Zoe" overcomes "psuche." But if we walk in "psuche" we will remain in bondage to the world. If we remain in bondage to the world, God cannot help us. God has given us His Word, that we can be free of all bondage in this world if we "Follow Jesus."
To "Follow Jesus," we must walk in "zoe," not in "psuche." What is the difference between "zoe" and "psuche"? Zoe is the very life of God living in us, teaching, guiding, helping, leading, and comforting us from our spirit (which is in our belly), not in our mind (which is in our head).
In Job 32:8 the Word of God tells us, "there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding." It is from our spirit that God works in our lives and gives us understanding of spiritual things, which then takes control over the natural things.
Zoe (life) is spiritual life. Psuche (life) is natural life. When we walk in the Spirit, we are led by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:1 says, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." When we walk in the Spirit, we are walking in the kingdom of God (which means "the reign of God"). In the kingdom of God, God the Holy Spirit is in control, not the person who is living on this earth in an earthly body of flesh and bones. Romans 14:17 says, "the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."
Righteousness means "in right standing with God." No one who is living in sin is in right standing with God (1 John 1:5,6). No one who loves the world and the things of this world are in right standing with God (1 John 2:15,16).
The abundant life Jesus was speaking of in John 10:10 is "...righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." When you are walking in "...righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost," you are being led by the Holy Spirit. When you are being led by the Holy Spirit you will be walking in "...righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost." These two go together, therefore in Romans 8:14 it says, "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God."
Jesus was, and still is "the Son of God." Therefore, we know that Jesus was "led by the Holy Spirit" in everything He did. The "abundant life" Jesus was speaking of in John 10:10 involves walking in the Spirit and being led by the Holy Spirit.
Christians should understand that God is in control of everything that happens in this creation. Being Christians, we are God's children. God is our Father and loves us more then any earthly father every loved his own children.
God works all things together for the benefit of all of His Children. God is GOD and God is the only One that can successfully supply all our needs. The abundant life is living with all our needs met by God, Who is well able to meet all our needs.
Zoe is the very life of God dwelling and living in us (in our spirit). Zoe is spiritual life living in our spirit where God's life flows through us by the power of His Holy Spirit dwelling in us.
