As we read the Scriptures, especially the New Testament, we should pay very close attention to what Jesus said. The reason it is so important to pay attention to what Jesus said, is our very existence is dependent upon the things that Jesus said.
There are many things that Jesus said, that Christians have overlooked, and not paid enough attention to them. There is a reason why it is that way, and if we will pay attention to what Jesus said, we can have victory in our lives. Victory in our lives is not dependent upon what we do of ourselves. Victory in our lives is dependent upon what we believe according to what Jesus said?
It takes the whole Bible from Genesis through Revelation to know and understand "this simple truth" concerning what Jesus said. The teachings of men will not reveal to us what Jesus said. When Jesus spoke, He was not always speaking to people directly. Many times, Jesus was speaking to "spirits" that were trying to control what people believed (Matt. 16:23). Christians are still being defeated in their lives by not understanding this.
In John 14:12, Jesus said to His disciples, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." Was Jesus speaking the truth when He said that to His disciples? Certainly, Jesus always spoke the truth in everything He said.
How do we know that Jesus was speaking the truth? For those who are truly born again, they have a witness in themselves. Born again Christians know "beyond all doubt," that what Jesus said is truth. They also believe that Jesus was speaking the truth when He said in John 14:6, "...I am the way, the truth, and the life..." Those who are not born again may not believe that Jesus is the Truth. But for those who are born again, the truth is within them, and they know beyond all doubt that Jesus is the Truth.
Jesus is God with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Being God, Jesus cannot lie. If Jesus would lie, then He would become like the Devil, who is the father of lies (John 8:44).
When Jesus came into this world, He was without sin. There was no sin in Jesus when He was born into this world of the Holy Spirit and Mary (a virgin woman). All throughout Jesus' life here on earth He did not have any sin in Him. The Bible will verify this from Genesis through Revelation. In 2 Corinthians 5:21, speaking of Jesus it says, "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
If, what Jesus said at anytime would not have been the truth, He would have lied. Had Jesus lied at any time He would have had sin in His life. If Jesus had any sin in His life, He could not have been able to take our sins upon Himself and set us free of sin and death. Had Jesus lied, then everything we believe concerning the Word of God and our eternal life would be a lie also. No one can receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life if they do not believe that Jesus told the truth in everything He said.
Once Christians decide to believe what Jesus said, in everything He said, they will find freedom and victory in their lives. Jesus is the Truth, and the Truth never lies. Therefore, whatsoever Jesus said is Truth.
As we study the things that Jesus said, keep in mind, Jesus is the Truth, and the Truth cannot lie. What Jesus said is truth, and when we believe the Truth, the Truth will set us free (John 8:31,32).
In Mark 9:23, Jesus said "to a man" whose son was possessed with a deaf and dumb spirit, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth."
Jesus did not have any doubt, when he spoke. Jesus believed the Word's He spoke would cause "whatsoever He said" to come to pass. Therefore, Jesus said "to the spirit," "...Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him" (Mark 9:25).
Notice that Jesus did not speak to the father or the son that was possessed by the deaf and dumb. Jesus "spoke to the spirit" that was controlling what the son was doing. Jesus believed the words He spoke would accomplish that which He said. Therefore, it says in Mark 9:26, "And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead."
When Christians believe, and do not doubt, "what they say will come to pass." When "we doubt" the spirits will not obey what we say.
This same account is also recorded in Matthew 17:14-21. In Matthew 17:19,20 it says, "Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?...And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief..." Jesus told His disciples that the reason they could not cast out the deaf and dumb spirit was because of their "unbelief."
This is a truth that Jesus taught His disciples, and it also applies to all Christians. Any Christian that will believe what Jesus said, "and will not doubt," will be able to do what Jesus said they can do.
In every area of our lives, the problems we have, are not because of what someone else did. The problem is our "doubt and unbelief" concerning "what Jesus said." When we believe what Jesus said, and do not doubt, we will have victory in our lives also.
Doubt & Unbelief
To overcome doubt and unbelief, we need to know the Truth. Of ourselves (by our own ability), we cannot overcome doubt and unbelief. But, "knowing" the Truth, and "believing" the Truth, can help us to overcome all doubt and unbelief.
In John 7:38, it says, "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water." Was Jesus telling us the truth? Certainly, Jesus cannot lie. What Christians need to understand is that Jesus was not talking about "liquid water." The word "water" in John 7:38 is a symbolic word, speaking of "the Word of God," coming out of our belly by the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In John 7:39, the Apostle John explained what Jesus was talking about by saying, "(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified)."
When a Christian receives the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, they receive the ability of the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It is by the anointing of the Holy Spirit that doubt and unbelief are overcome.
We need the help of the Holy Spirit to overcome the works of the Devil. Many Christians today do not have the Holy Spirit working in their lives. They have never received the Holy Spirit since they believed and were born again (Acts 19:2).
If Christians would believe what Jesus said concerning the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, and then receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, they would experience the help of the Holy Spirit in overcoming doubt and unbelief. I received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in May of 1981, and since that time the Holy Spirit has helped me overcome doubt and unbelief many times.
I experienced what Jesus was talking about shortly after receiving of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. In June of 1981, I broke my toe on a Saturday afternoon in a downtown apartment building. I was on a Television service call. I was leaving an apartment building, carrying the chassis of a Televison set in my arms. It was not easy to see where I was walking. As I was going through the door, I stubbed my foot on a concrete block in the doorway. I felt a sharp pain in my toe, I knew I had broken it. I drove home, took off my shoe and saw the swelling and the black and blue coloring of my foot. I felt the pain.
When this happened, my mind began to receive thoughts from the Devil. I knew it was broken. I had experienced a broken bone in my body years ago. The pain of a broken bone is different from that of a sprain or torn ligament.
The thought came to me, "I had better go to the hospital and get it x-rayed, to be sure the bone was in the right place." The second thought that went through my head was, "When I do that the doctor will cut out the front of my shoe and put a bandage on my toe, and I will go around like that for about six weeks."
Then the Spirit of God rose up within me and said, "You don't have to do that, by His stripes you are healed, He bore your sickness and infirmities, tell the devil to take a jump." Immediately I said, "Devil get out, I don't need this and you can't put this on me, by His stripes I am healed." "Jesus, Himself took my infirmities and bore my sickness, so you can go take a jump. Thank You, Jesus."
All of this time I was alone in the house. I spoke words out loud to the Devil and I confessed before God my healing. Then I took a shower, dressed up, and went out for lunch.
The thought again came to me to go to the hospital and have an x-ray, but then I said within myself, "Why should I spend God's money for something I didn't need. God's Word is true and I am healed."
That day my foot was very sore but I kept on going. The person I went to lunch with said to me, "Merle, you should have stayed home, and not be walking around on that foot." I just said, "Don't worry about it, it's Ok."
The next day the soreness left. It was Sunday, and I went to Church. On Monday evening I showed my foot to those at my house who were there for a share group meeting. All we could see was one red spot and a blue stripe mark where the break had been. Praise the Lord for His Word! By Tuesday all was back to normal, no red spot, no blue stripe.
On Friday, I showed my foot to a nurse friend of mine. I told her what had happened the Saturday before and how the foot came back to normal in three days. She said, "It had to be God, for in the natural it would take ten days to two weeks before the black and blue would be gone."
Many Christians today are trying to do what the Scriptures say we should do by their own ability. They believe they can do what it says without the help of the Holy Spirit. They are not believing what Jesus said in John 15:4. Jesus said, "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me."
Jesus is "the Word of God" (John 1:1, 14; 1 John 1:1,2; 5:7). To abide in Jesus, we must abide in "the Word of God." To abide in "the Word of God," we must be continually keeping the Word of God in our heart and in our mind.
When Christians go about doing what they have been doing all their lives before they were born again, they are not abiding in the Word of God. They are still following the teachings of man.
In the world, people are taught by other people, what to do and how to do it. Educated people (those who have gone to schools and colleges) have been doing the teaching of others. They teach what to do and how to do it?
God has a better plan for learning and teaching what to do and how to do it? When Jesus was about twelve years old (at the time of the feast of the Passover), Jesus spent at least three days "in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions" (Luke 2:46). Jesus was more interested in what the Scriptures had to say, than what the world has to say. We could say, "Jesus was taught by God, not by man."
When we are taught by God, we will know things without learning. We will experience the leading, guiding, comforting, helping, and teaching of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Jesus, quoting the Scriptures said, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God..." (John 6:45). In Isaiah 54:13 it says, "And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children."
Then in Isaiah 28:9-11 it says, "Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts...For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little...For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people." Therefore in 1 Corinthians 14:2 it says, "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."
When we are speaking in tongues, God will teach us things that we do not receive by the teachings of men. The "mysteries" spoken of in 1 Corinthians 14:2 are things that God knows, but we do not know. When God reveals things to us, it is the truth, and it is not a lie. This truth that is revealed to us by the Holy Spirit, will help us to overcome the doubt and unbelief in our minds that prevents us from believing and receiving what the Word of God promises us.
The day that I was healed of a broken toe, it was the Holy Spirit within me that helped me to overcome doubt and unbelief. When the doubt and unbelief are overcome, the Words we speak come to pass, and we have the victory.
In John 14:13,14, Jesus said, "And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son...If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." Do you believe that, whatsoever you ask in Jesus' name, He will do it? Many Christians do not truly believe what Jesus said in John 14:13,14.
Years ago, a brother in the LORD called me and we went out for lunch after Church one Sunday. While at lunch, he said to me, "Merle, I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't have enough money coming in to pay my bills. I've been in business for thirty-years. I keep up my advertising, I'm doing everything the way I always did, but the work and the money are not coming in." I said to him, "Why don't you go over to John 14:13,14, and ask the LORD to bring in work for you, that you have enough to pay your bills?" He looked at me, and I said, "Just ask the LORD to bring in the work you need, and then thank and praise Him for doing it." I said to him,"Do this every morning. Thank Him and praise Him, and He will bring in the work you need!"
About two weeks later, he called me and told me, he had all the work he could do, and was making a lot of money to pay his bills with. A number of times he told me, the work is coming in and the money is coming, and he would say, "And you and I know it's not my advertising."
On January 15, 2004, He called me and said, "Merle, I just wanted to tell you, I have to pay over $3,000 additional taxes today." He made more money in the last six months of that year than he made all year the year before.
If Christians will believe what Jesus said, they will have victory in their lives over all the circumstances that come against them. It is knowing that Jesus cannot lie, that helps us to overcome the circumstances.
What Christians should know, but do not realize is that our problems in our lives are caused by "spirits." There are two ways to overcome the "spirits" that are trying to control the circumstances in our lives. One way is to rebuke the spirits, in Jesus' name and command them to leave us.
The other way is by prayer. Praying, is asking the LORD, or the Holy Spirit to rebuke the "demonic spirits" for us. When we ask "in Jesus' name," the anointing of the Holy Spirit within us takes control of the "demonic spirits," and casts them out. It is the anointing within us, that we received when we were baptized in the Holy Spirit that does the works.
In Matthew 12:28, speaking to the Pharisees, Jesus said, "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." This is where many Christians have not been taught correctly. They have not been taught the value of being baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
Being they are not Baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, the anointing is not working in them to overcome the works of the Devil. Without the anointing, they do not have the power within them to do what Jesus said they should.
There are many Christian churches today that have services every Sunday, and even some times during the week. Yet, they still do not speak in tongues. They have not been baptized in the Holy Spirit. They are similar to the saints in Ephesus, when the Apostle Paul came to Ephesus in Acts, Chapter nineteen. The Apostle Paul knew there was something very important missing in the lives of those Christians. Being that the Apostle Paul was led by the Holy Spirit, he said to them, "Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?" (Acts 19:2).
When they told Paul their situation concerning the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, Paul, "...laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied" (Acts 19:6).
I believe that there are many Christians today that could be free of many of the attacks of the spirits of this world, if they would believe what Jesus said. And then receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. This is the starting point in a Christian's life to have victory over the works of the Devil.
Once a Christian has received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, they need to pray in the Spirit everyday. Everyday, the spirits of this world are attacking Christians. Everyday Christians are receiving thoughts in their minds from the spirits of this world. These thoughts need to be brought into subjection to the anointing within us.
In 2 Corinthians 10:5 it says, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." Christians are born again in Christ Jesus. The Spirit of Christ dwells in them. Christ is the Anointed One. It is the anointing within us that destroys the thoughts that come from the spirits of this world.
The anointing within us works when we speak in tongues. By speaking in tongues, we activate the power of God within us to overcome the works of the spirits of this world. If we do not pray, God cannot release the power of the anointing within us.
Christians have a free will. God will not override a Christian's free will. To overcome the works of the spirits of this world, we need to release the anointing within us. The anointing is always in us once we have received the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. But the anointing will only be of value to us if we release it.
We activate the anointing by praying in the Spirit. Then we release the anointing by the laying on of hands and speaking the Word of God over the situations in our lives.
What many Christians have not understood is the way to release the anointing. They have the anointing within them. But they do not understand how to release the anointing. There are different ways to release the anointing. One way is to receive from our spirit, the leading of the Holy Spirit to speak Words. That is what happened in my life many times. That is what happened when I broke my toe in 1981. That is what happened in my life when I spoke to a brother in the LORD in 2003, concerning how to receive help for his finances. When we are led by the Holy Spirit to speak, we need to do the speaking. If we do not say anything, nothing will happen. Things happen after we speak the words that the Holy Spirit brings to us from our spirit.
The Holy Spirit dwells in our spirit. It is from our spirit where the anointing comes from. When we learn how to release the anointing from our spirit, we will experience the power of God working in our lives to overcome the spirits of this world.
Jesus taught us a lot of things that will help us, if we will do what Jesus said. When Jesus spoke, He was telling us the truth. When we believe what Jesus told us, and do what Jesus said to do, we will have victory in our lives.
Our whole life, here on earth and hereafter in eternity is dependent upon us believing the Words that Jesus spoke. What Jesus said is truth, and it does work if we do what Jesus said.
Remember, one of the most important things that Jesus said is in John 3:6,7, where Jesus said, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit...Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
If there is anyone reading this Mini-book and they are not positive, beyond all doubt that they are born again, they should believe what Jesus said. When anyone believes what Jesus said, and receives Jesus into their life as their LORD and Savior, they will become born again into the family of God.
In John 1:12 it says, "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Do what the Bible says. "Believe in your heart" and pray:
"LORD Jesus, I know that You are the Son of God. I know that You died on the cross for me. I know that God raised You from the dead.
Jesus, forgive me of all my sins, wash me clean in Your blood; that I may be the righteousness of God in You. Thank You, Jesus!
Jesus, I ask You to come into my life! Live Your life in me! Let Your will be done in me! Let the will of God be done in my life as it was in Your life. I surrender my life to You, Jesus!
You lead me by Your Spirit and I will follow to the best of my ability. I will live for You all the days of my life, as You lead me by Your Spirit.
I receive You now, as my LORD, and SAVIOR for all eternity. I will be with You here on earth, and I will be with You in heaven, forever and ever. I will give You all the Glory. It is for You that I will live forever. Amen."
Once you have received Jesus into your life as your LORD and Savior, continue in the Word of God and prayer every day of your life. Do not just pray once in a while. Luke 18:1 says, "And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint."
In Jude 1:20 it says, "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost." Praying in the Holy Ghost is the same as praying in the Spirit. The King James Bible uses the words "Holy Ghost," whereas other translations use the words "Holy Spirit." They both mean the same thing.
When Jesus was teaching in the Gospels on prayer, He could not teach them to pray in the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit was not yet given (John 7:38,39). Now that Jesus has gone to be with the Father, He sent the Holy Spirit to indwell in Christians and give them the power to destroy the works of the Devil.
The works of the Devil are destroyed by the anointing of the Holy Spirit within us when we pray in the Holy Spirit. This is very important for Christians to understand. If they are not anointed by the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, they need to be.
Without the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, we do not have the power, which is the anointing within us. The anointing comes with the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said to His disciples in Acts 1:5, "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." If Jesus' disciples needed the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, then we also need the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. In Acts 1:8, Jesus said to His disciples, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth."
The first and most important thing in a person's life, is to become born again. But that is only the beginning of our life in Christ. We also need the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. That is where we get the power to overcome the spirits of this world.
If you have not been baptized with the Holy Spirit, with the evidence of speaking in tongues, pray a prayer while believing in your heart on what God has promised you in His Word. Pray:
"LORD Jesus, You said in Mark 16:17, that in Your name I can cast out devils.
Satan, in the name of Jesus' I cast you out of my mind. You have no authority over my mind. My mind is clear of all demonic oppression in Jesus' name.
Father, according to Your Word in Luke 11:13, You promised me the Holy Spirit if I ask. Father, I am now asking You to give me the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in Your heavenly language. I receive Him from You now, in Jesus' name."
Continue to pray in the Spirit every day. Place God first in your life and live for God every day.
To do the will of God in our lives, we must do it according to the Scriptures, and not let the Devil tell us there is another way. There is only one way to do the will of God, and that way is written in the Scriptures, and witnessed by the Holy Spirit within us.
There is a great miss-understanding among many Christians today. They know they are born again. But they do not understand the importance of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit, is so that the Holy Spirit can work in our lives as our Helper, Guide, Comforter, Leader, and Teacher. We limit God by not having the anointing within us to receive from the Holy Spirit all that He has come here on earth to do for us.
God knows that of our own ability we cannot defeat the spirits of this world. Therefore, God sent the Holy Spirit to help us defeat the spirits of this world. Jesus came to take away the sin of the world, so we could become born again into the family of God. The Holy Spirit came to empower us to defeat the spirits of this world, by the anointing within us.
It is our desire to see God manifest in your life by working in you and through you. We love the LORD our God. He is love, and He will manifest His love in the lives of those who love Him.
