This booklet is Part 5 of "Walk in the Light." For those who have not read the other Parts, it would be very helpful if they would get a copy and read them first. The information in the other Parts is very important to understanding this Part. The other Parts can be downloaded freely from our Web sites, at:
In 1 John 1:3, it says, "That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ." Then in 1 John 1:6,7 it says, "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth...But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." Why is it so important that we have fellowship with God? Why is it important that we walk in the light?
There are only two gods in this world. There is Our God (1 John 5:7), and there is the Devil, the god of this world (2 Cor. 4:4). If people are not having fellowship with God (then unknowingly to many), they are having fellowship with the Devil (the god of this world).
Fellowship with God helps us to maintain our relationship to God and helps us enter into heaven when we leave this world. If our fellowship and relationship are broken between us and God, we may not enter into eternal life in heaven. Jesus taught this in the parable of the Prodical son in Luke 15:11-32. Concerning the one son who took his inheritance and went off into a far country, the father said, "...this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found" (Luke 15:32). Had that son not repented and returned to his father, he would have remained lost and dead.
To the churches mentioned in Revelation Chapters Two and Three, Jesus said, "Repent." It would be very helpful if Christians would study carefully the first three chapters of the book of Revelation. What is revealed in the Book of Revelation is just as important as what is revealed in the Gospel of John and the Epistles of John. Eternity is a long time to spend in the wrong place, simply because we did not study the Scriptures to know the truth, and walk in the light as God is in the light.
In the first four parts to this series of Mini-Books on Walk in the Light, we see that our fellowship begins by having fellowship with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is also called "the Word of God," or "the Word of Life" (John 1:1; 1 John 1:1, 5:7, Rev. 19:13). To have true fellowship with the Father and the Son, we must continue to study the Scriptures and believe the written Word of God.
Without the written Word of God we cannot have true fellowship with the Father and the Son. What the written Word of God tells us, is the same as if God the Father spoke to us audibly from heaven (The written Word always comes before any audible voice) (2 Peter 1:19-21). Anything a prophet says, must agree with the written Word. What God is saying to Christians today is already written in His Word. Therefore, to have true fellowship with the Father and the Son we must believe the written Word of God.
There are three persons in the Godhead. In 1 John 5:7 it says, "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."
To have fellowship with God we must also have fellowship with the Holy Spirit. This fellowship with the Holy Spirit is so important that Jesus made mention of it in the Gospel of John, saying, "It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me." We cannot come to Jesus, unless the Father draws us by His Holy Spirit. We cannot become born again into the family of God unless the Holy Spirit makes us a new creature in Christ. In John 3:6 it says, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
That which is born of the Spirit is born of the Holy Spirit into the family of God. John 1:13 says, "Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." The Holy Spirit is very important in our lives as a Christian.
Jesus said in John 16:13, "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come." In 1 John 2:27 it says, "But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him."
Let us never neglect the teaching of the Holy Spirit in our lives. He is our teacher, sent from the Father and the Son, that we will know the Truth from the written Word of God.
WALK IN THE LIGHT
It is very clear in 1 John 2:27 that the Apostle John is talking about the Holy Spirit abiding in Christians. It is also very clear that the Holy Spirit is to be our teacher, not men.
Therefore, if Christians are to walk in the light, as God is in the light, they need more than just the Word of God, they also need the anointing of the Holy Spirit abiding in them, "to teach them all things."
Continuing on in the First Epistle of John from where we left off in the end of 1 John Chapter Three, let us look at the beginning of Chapter Four. In 1 John 4:1, it says, "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
It tells us we must "...try the spirits whether they are of God..." To effectively try the spirits we need the anointing of the Holy Spirit within us. We are not to "judge others," but we are to try the spirits. It is by the anointing within us that we can know if the spirits operating through another person are of God or not?
The reason we are told to "try the spirits," is "...because many false prophets are gone out into the world." A false prophet is one who is getting their information from another source, not from the Holy Spirit. One of the most common sources is the psychic realm, where spiritualist and those operating in the spiritualistic realm get their information from. This is the realm of the spirit that familiar spirits operate from. This type of operation is not uncommon today, even in some of the Churches.
In 1 John 4:2,3 it says, "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:..And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." The subject of trying the spirits is continued, but also the subject changed to the antichrist spirits in these same verses.
Whether it is other spirits or the antichrist spirits, the trying of the spirits is done the same way. It says, "...Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:..And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God." This is speaking of the antichrist spirit, for the antichrist spirit will not confess that "...Jesus Christ is come in the flesh..." We should pay particular attention to the "present tense" words "is come." For many newer Bible translations have changed this to the "past tense," saying "has come."
The spirits of antichrist will confess that Jesus Christ "has come" in the flesh about two thousand years ago. But, if they do not confess that "Jesus Christ is come in the flesh" today (dwelling in everyone who is born again into the family of God) they are not of God. God is presently dwelling in every truly born again Christian at this time. In 1 John 5:10 it says, "He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son." Anyone who does not have that "witness in himself," is not born of God.
In speaking of the antichrist spirits in 1 John 2:18,19, we are told that the antichrist spirits are among Christians, but they are not truly Christians. Not everyone who says they are a Christian, is a Christian. It is by their confession that we know them.
In 1 John 4:4 it tells us, "Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world." Here again it uses the "present tense" words saying "...greater is he that is in you..." The words "is in you" are "present tense." Anyone who does not confess that God is in them, is not born of God. That is the anitchrist spirit.
We can identify the false spirits and the antichrist spirits by their confession, (by the words that come out of their mouth, you will know them).
You will also know them by their love (agape). If they are not walking in love, they are not walking in the light. If they are not walking in the light, there is another spirit operating through them.
This is why it is so important that we try the spirits if they are of God. Other spirits, which are not of God will manifest through Christians (even through Spirit-filled Christians): Even through Apostles, Prophets, Teachers, Evangelists, and Pastors. Just because a person is called into the ministry that does not mean a false spirit cannot manifest through them.
Therefore, we must try "all the spirits," not just the anitchrist spirits. For more information on trying the spirit, get the Mini-book series "Try the Spirits." These can be downloaded from our Web sites at:
Until Christians understand spiritual things, they cannot walk after the Spirit. Yet, Christians cannot understand spiritual things unless the Holy Spirit gives them understanding. In 1 Corinthians 2:12-14 says,
"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God...Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual...But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."
This is not written just for a few who think they are hearing from God. This is written for every born again Christian. Every born again Christian should be receiving "spiritual discernment," from the Holy Spirit within them.
No one can correctly try the spirits if they do not know and understand the Holy Spirit. To know and understand the Holy Spirit they must be born again of the Spirit. In John 3:6 it says, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." In Colossians 1:13, it says, "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son." A Christian must be translated into the kingdom of God's Son. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 it says, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
Let me tell of what happened in my life. (This testimony given here is shortened, for this Mini-book, to allow for more important information on the antichrist spirits). I was raised in a church denomination, who "at that time" taught against speaking in tongues. For about thirty years, I was actively participating in that denominations activities. I was a Sunday School teacher in one Church. I worked with Pastors to set up a new three year program for Sunday School. I was a Church council member in a number of Churches that I attended. From the age of sixteen until forty-five, I remained an active member of that denomination.
When I became born again of the Holy Spirit in 1979, within less than two months I was watching a television broadcast, where the person speaking was talking about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
From within my spirit, there came a great desire to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. That desire was so great that I started searching for someone, who could help me receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
I went to different places and talked to different Christians about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. God was working in my life with many evidences of His love for me. Many times, I received healing in my physical body, without even praying for healing. I knew God was working in my life, but the desire for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues was always there.
I went to different Churches and spoke to different people, but without any help. Then I contacted a Pastor of a Church where they did speak in tongues. In that Church I attended classes on the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues.
Many times, they prayed for me, but I did not audibly speak in tongues. I started to travel to different locations and different meetings to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The desire for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit never left me.
After nearly two years of doing all I knew to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, I attended a meeting where the speakers were teaching on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
The husband started speaking, and then his wife took over. This woman taught for about an hour or more, then they begin praying for those who wanted prayer (which included prayer for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit). I waited, and waited, and waited, to be prayed with. During the time I was waiting, and waiting, many thoughts came to my mind "Just go, you can come back tomorrow and someone will pray for you!" Each time, I said within myself, "I am not leaving until I get prayed for."
When I did get prayed for, the woman said to me, "What would you want the LORD to do for you?" I said, "I want to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues." I tried to tell her that many people had prayed for me many times, and I did not receive. She just nicely said to me, "First, forgive anyone who you have not forgiven and ask the LORD to forgive you for anything you have not forgiven others for." I did. Then she said, "Now, just raise up your hands and take a deep breath." When I did that, I began to speak in tongues, and could not stop myself, even when I wanted to. I wanted to move out of the isle so others could get around me, but I could not move my feet. I wanted to thank the LORD in my own language, but I could not speak in English. The speaking in tongues kept coming out of my mouth and I could not stop for at least seven to ten minutes.
The next day, I met with this husband and his wife for lunch. When I wanted to tell her what had happened in my life and all the times I tried to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and did not speak in tongues, she told me, "The LORD showed her while she was speaking, things in my life in the past, and told her He was going to Baptize me in the Holy Spirit that day." Everything I wanted to tell her, she told me.
The LORD wanted me to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit already within weeks from the day I was born again. But, I believe "the spirits of antichrist" were working against me. Being that I had been in groups that taught against the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues for so long, the antichrist spirits had a powerful hold on my life. They were against me speaking in tongues. They did not want me to receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit. They did not want me to have power over them and over the works of the Devil.
Jesus said in Acts 1:8, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." The antichrist spirits are against the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians.
Being a new creature in Christ (born again of the Holy Spirit), Christians need to have the Holy Spirit working in their lives as their Helper, Guide, Comforter, Leader, and Teacher. Christians, who have not received the baptism in the Holy Spirit since they believed upon Jesus Christ as their Savior are not anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the works that God planned for their lives (Acts 1:4,5,8;2:4).
Those who have been taught against the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues may have been affected by the anitchrist spirits who are in this world today. These spirits had been in the world already at the time that the Apostle John wrote this Epistle.
Today, the same religious spirits of this world come against the Holy Spirit, and the anointing. Some Churches do not allow speaking in tongues. Some Churches teach against speaking in tongues. This could be very dangerous for Christians who teach against the Baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. It could be blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in Matthew 12:31,32, "Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men...And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come."
Do not let the Devil tell you, if you have spoken against speaking in tongues, that you cannot be forgiven. The Apostle Paul said in 1 Timothy 1:12,13, "And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry...Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief." If you have spoken against speaking in tongues, repent and receive forgiveness, receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and go on and serve the LORD with all your heart.
When religious spirits teach against speaking in tongues they are in fact teaching against the Holy Spirit, who is sent by the Father and the Son to help, guide, comfort, lead and teach those who are born again into the body of Christ.
Speaking against "speaking in tongues" is speaking against God. For it is the Holy Spirit that gives us the ability to speak in tongues (Acts 2:4).
Satan, who is over all evil spirits knows the Scriptures. Satan knows what was written in Zechariah 4:6, saying, "...This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." This is a prophetic word for the New Covenant. In the New Covenant it is not going to be done by man's might, or by man's power, "...but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts." Notice, it says it would not be done by man, or man's ability. Also, it does not say it was going to be the LORD doing it. It says that it is going to be done by "the Spirit of the LORD." The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the LORD.
All things of God in the New Covenant will be done by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will confirm the Word of God with signs following. Everything in the New Covenant is controlled by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus began teaching on the work of the Holy Spirit after that John was put into prison. In Mark 1:14,15 it says, "Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God...And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." The kingdom of God is the "reign of God." The Holy Spirit is God here on earth.
When Jesus arose again and ascended to be at the right hand of the Father, they sent the Holy Spirit to control all things here on earth. The New Covenant is under the operation of the Holy Spirit. All the gifts of the Spirit are under the control of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:7-11). All the fruit of the Spirit are given by the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22,23). All demons are cast out by the Holy Spirit. In Matthew 12:28, Jesus said, "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." Jesus did not cast out the devils. The Holy Spirit cast them out when Jesus spoke the Word.
The whole New Covenant is "the reign of God," working through those who receive the Holy Spirit and permit the Holy Spirit to operate through them. Jesus operated by the anointing of the Holy Spirit Himself. Jesus did not do any ministry work until after He was anointed with the Holy Spirit following His water baptism by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit first came upon Jesus after He was water baptized (Matt. 3:16).
From that time on, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit in everything He did (Matt. 4:1; Luke 4:1). Now, that the Holy Spirit has come, the body of Christ is also to be led by the Holy Spirit in everything they do.
The antichrist spirits are against the anointing "which teaches us all things" (1 John 2:27). They are against "speaking in tongues." The Holy Spirit is sent by the Father and the Son to be our Helper, Guide, Comforter, Leader, and Teacher. All of these things are done by the anointing which abides in those who are Baptized in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8: 2:4).
Jesus is also called "The Word of God" (John 1:1). The Holy Spirit can only confirm the Word of God. The Word of God must come first, then the Holy Spirit can bear witness to the Word (1 John 5:8).
Therefore, Jesus had to come into this world first, before the Holy Spirit could be given to help, guide, comfort, lead, and teach us in all things. Now that Jesus has gone to be with the Father, the Holy Spirit is here on earth to reign as God, until Jesus comes back in His Second coming.
Everything that God is involved within the New Covenant is under the direction and power of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the antichrist spirits are here on earth to keep Christians from yielding over to the Holy Spirit, to be their helper, guide, comforter, leader, and teacher.
What man does of his own ability is done by the flesh. What is of the flesh is not acceptable by God. The flesh and the Spirit are contrary to each other (Gal. 5:16,17). Only that which the Holy Spirit does through man, will be accepted by God the Father and the Son.
The Holy Spirit teaches us, as we pray in the Spirit (1 Cor. 14:2). It is not by man's teaching, but by the teaching of the Holy Spirit that we will know the truth (1 John 2:27). For more information on the baptism in the Holy Spirit get the book "Tongues of Fire," written by Merle E. Koepke.
