Introduction

One day, out of my spirit came these words "Words are Spirit." I knew I needed to go back and study what Jesus said in John 6:63. Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth (zoopoieo); the flesh profiteth nothing: the words (rhema) that I speak unto you, they are spirit (pneuma), and they are life (zoe)."

No matter how often we read certain Scripture verses, there could still be something that we did not see clearly in a certain verse. This verse is very important to understand. It reveals an important part of the lives of Christians who understand this verse.

Looking at this verse in the Greek we will find that Jesus was saying "It is the Holy Spirit that brings life." Yet it is important to know that Jesus is not talking about natural life in the flesh. Jesus is talking about (zoe) life, which is the very life of God Himself. The English Word "quickeneth" means "vitalize, make alive, or give life." In John 6:63, the word "word" in the English is the Greek word (rhema), which means "an utterance."

When we put this into the right perspective, Jesus was saying the Words He speaks are life giving Words of God which the Holy Spirit empowers to produce and sustain eternal life. Jesus' Words are life giving Words, not death giving words.

Jesus does not condemn anyone (John 3:17).The Words Jesus speaks are for the purpose of giving and maintaining eternal life.

Jesus is saying, "It is the Holy Spirit that takes the Words that He speaks and makes them come alive in our lives." It is not a work of the flesh, but rather a work of the Holy Spirit.

It is important to understand that Jesus said, the Words that He speaks "are spirit." They are not spirits, like angels and demons. They are spiritual in nature, which means, they control spirits and spiritual operations.

Let us see one example of the Words that Jesus speaks in Mark 1:23-26. There was in the synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. Jesus spoke words, saying, "Hold thy peace, and come out of him" (Mark 1:25). That spirit came out of that man. The Words Jesus spoke released the authority of the Holy Spirit and the spirit came out of the man.

Jesus did not cast out that spirit by His own power. In Matthew 12:28, Jesus said, "But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you." In John 14:10 Jesus said, "Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." It was the Words that Jesus spoke that made it possible for the Holy Spirit to empower Jesus' Words and cause the unclean spirit to come out of that man in Mark 1:23-26.

In understanding what Jesus was doing, look at what Jesus said in John 8:26. Jesus said, "...I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him." By this we see that Jesus was not out there just speaking words like many people do. Jesus was first hearing from His Father before He spoke. Jesus received the Words from His Father first, then He spoke them.

This understanding can help Christians a lot, once they understand it. We don't go around just speaking words, and expecting God to do whatsoever we say. Jesus was not doing that either.

Jesus said in John 5:30, "I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me." Too often, Christians are going about speaking their own will, and expecting God to do whatsoever they say. That is not what Jesus was talking about. Jesus did not do His own will, He only did the will of God the Father.

Yet, there is much that we can learn from Jesus. And there is a lot that we can learn from what Jesus said in John 6:63.

When words are spoken, they are "spirit" and they control what happens in the spiritual realm. There are two spiritual realms within this creation. There is the spiritual realm of God and the angels. There is also the spiritual realm of the Devil and his demons.

These two spiritual realms respond to words that are spoken. When the Word of God goes forth, both spiritual realms are affected. God's Word goes forth to bring love, joy, peace, faith, healing, etc. God's Word usually goes forth to produce life, and everything connected with giving life and maintaining life. God's Word also goes forth to control demonic spirits and stop them from doing what they try to do.

Satan also uses words to control spirits. Satan's words affect the world, people, and other spirits. Satan's words are usually used for destruction, and anything concerning sickness, and death.

WORDS ARE SPIRIT

Christians can, and should experience the authority of spoken words in their lives everyday. Words are spirit and they can produce life or death.

I recall a sister in the LORD one day, speaking words of spirit and life. Her husband, herself, and another friend were in a restaurant for lunch one day. While they were eating, she looked at her husband and he looked sick. His face was turning color. His breathing seemed to be unusual and even stopped. She could see there was something wrong. When she spoke to him, he did not answer.

This sister in the LORD jumped up from her seat and spoke words, Saying something like this "I rebuke you spirit of death. Danny, I command your spirit to come back into your body right now in Jesus' Name. Danny, you shall not die, but you shall live and declare the works of the LORD." This sister in the LORD was speaking the written Word of God over her husband. She was quoting Psalm 118:17, which says, "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD."

When this sister in the LORD did that almost everyone in the restaurant heard her. A number of people in the restaurant watched to see what was happening. Someone called the Paramedics, knowing that her husband was very ill.

During that time this sister in the LORD continued to speak words over her husband. The Paramedics came, but at first did not see the Restaurant and passed by. This sister in the LORD kept speaking life into her husbands body. She kept speaking the written Word of God over her husband.

By the time the Paramedics got there her husband was sitting up, and talking to her and others. The Paramedics wanted to take him to the hospital and have him checked out. But he insisted he was ok, and did not need to go to the hospital. Then the Paramedics had him sign a statement that he was ok, and did not want to go to the hospital. This sister in the LORD's husband continued to live for years after that, doing the work of the LORD.

Words "are spirit," and they control what spirits do. They control what spirits can do and what spirits cannot do. When the Word of God is spoken, it does exactly what the Word of God says it will do.

Just like Jesus spoke Words and demons came out of people, this sister spoke Words and her husband came back to living a normal life. The spirit of death had to leave and life had to come back into her husbands body.

Christians should be speaking Words of spirit and life every day. Whenever any situation comes against someone, Christians should be speaking words of spirit and life over that situation.

One morning when I finished taking a shower, the towel caught a lump on my left ear. My ear started to bleed. Blood was running down my neck. This had happened once years ago, and I had totally forgotten about it. There was a small growth on my ear, and blood was coming out next to the growth.

I took a wash cloth, and soaked it in cold water. I washed some of the blood off. Then I took my thumb and finger on my left hand and held the spot on my ear tightly. I said, "In the name of Jesus, I command this bleeding to stop, in Jesus' name." I waited and continued to hold my ear for about two minutes. Then I let go of my ear, washed the blood off my neck and other parts of my body. I dried myself and got dressed. I did not do anything else to my ear. The bleeding had stopped and I was healed.

The words I spoke was the Word of God, given to us in the Bible. Christians have been given the right to use the name of Jesus against any and all works of the Devil. The Devil has the power to inflect people with sickness and disease. But Christians have the right to use the name of Jesus against the works of the Devil (Luke 10:19).

All it takes is for Christians to know and understand the Word of God. Then do what the Word of God tells us to do. When we use the Word of God according to what the Bible tells us, it will work.

In 1 John 5:8 it tells us, "And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one." When it mentions "the water" in the King James Version of the Bible it is talking about "the Word of God." Christians have the Holy Spirit, the Word of God and the blood of Jesus to use against any works of the Devil These are the only three witnesses that Christians have that are of God. All three of these agree with each other and work together to deliver people from the works of the enemy.

The Holy Spirit always bears witness with the Word of God and the blood of Jesus. When it comes to any type of healing for our bodies, the body and blood of Jesus was given on the Cross of Calvary for our healing. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit will always agree with the blood of Jesus.

When I spoke words, saying, "In the name of Jesus, I command this bleeding to stop, in Jesus' name," the Holy Spirit confirmed the words I spoke and the bleeding stopped.

The Holy Spirit must be involved when we speak the Word God. If the Holy Spirit is not involved then we can do all the speaking we want and nothing will happen. Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth..." (John 6:63). If the Holy Spirit does not "vitalize" the Word of God, nothing will happen.

Many Christians have spoken words over and over and over and nothing happened. Why, because they are operating in the flesh, and the Holy Spirit is not involved. God did not say He will do the will of men. God gave us His Word that He will do His will here on earth, not the will of man. Therefore, the Holy Spirit only does the will of God here on earth.

Jesus said, He did not do His own will (John 6:38). That is why that Jesus had such great success when He walked this earth. He did not do the will of the flesh. He only did the will of God the Father.

There was a time that I had a growth on my finger. It was there and growing for about two weeks. One day, I was praying in the Spirit, while driving down the road, and out of my spirit came these words, "Why don't you curse the roots on that growth and command it to die and fall off"? I immediately cursed the roots in Jesus' name and commanded them to die and the growth to fall off.

It seemed as though nothing happened when I prayed. The growth was still there. I couldn't see any change. For weeks I continued to change the band-aid I had been putting on it to protect it. One thing I noticed after a week or so was that it was not getting any larger. It stayed about the same size.

About a month later, as I was changing the band-aid, the growth fell off. It came off with the band-aid when I removed it to put on a new one. The words I spoke that day while driving down the road caused the growth to die. It did fall off after about a month. There was not even a mark where it had been.

What caused those words that I spoke to work? It was not my idea to speak those words at that time. It was the Holy Spirit in me that brought the words to my mind, that I should speak to that growth like Jesus spoke to the fig tree in Mark 11:14.

What Christians need to understand is that the Spirit and Word and the Blood of Jesus always agree with each other. When we are in agreement with these three, Satan and his demons must leave. Healing will come to our bodies when we agree with these three (the Holy Spirit, the Word of God and the Blood of Jesus Christ).

I am not the one that caused that growth to die and fall off. It was the Holy Spirit that caused that growth to die and fall off. The Holy Spirit "vitalized" the Word of God. This is what is meant by "rhema," (the spoken Word of God, bringing life to the written Word of God). We can speak the Written Word of God until our face turns blue and we have no more breath in our bodies, and nothing will happen if the Holy Spirit does not "vitalize" the Word of God as we speak it.

Words are spirit. Words control what spirits do. If we speak words that are not vitalized by the Holy Spirit, they only help the Devil do what he wants to do.

We help the Devil when we speak words that do not agree with what the Scripture says. We even help the Devil when we quote Bible verses that are not correctly translated from the Greek and Hebrew into English. Many English Bibles today are not correctly translated. Christians are quoting some of these Bible verses and nothing is happening. Why? The Holy Spirit cannot "vitalize" the words of men. He can only "vitalize" the "inspired Word of God."

Christians who do not study their Bibles and check and make sure that what their translation says is what the Holy Spirit inspired in the beginning can easily be deceived. They can be speaking what "their Bible" says over and over and nothing will happen. The Holy Spirit can only "vitalize" the Word of God that He inspired to be written.

Christians can become like "parrots." They can speak things that they heard others speak over and over but nothing will materialize from what they are speaking. Why is this? They are not doing what the Bible says to do. They are doing what someone else said to do. Parrots can speak the things they are taught to speak by people. But, their words have no power. The anointing of the Holy Spirit is not involved in the words they are speaking. They are only words, without power.

For the words that Christians speak to have power the Holy Spirit must also be involved. Words spoken without the Holy Spirit involved will only be words. Words are spirit, and they do cause spirits to respond to what is said.

Sometimes Christians are speaking words like the sons of Sceva in Acts 19:13-16. These sons of Sceva tried to speak against an evil spirit, using the name of Jesus that Paul used. In Acts 19:15 it says, "And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?" If the Holy Spirit is not involved in the speaking that is done, the demons will not leave.

One day I was on my way to do some errands and I met a sister in the LORD on the way. She said to me, "I'm on my way to a dentist, I have pain in one of my teeth." I did not say anything to her about not going to the dentist. I just left her do what she was doing. Later that day I saw her again and I said to her "What did the dentist say was wrong"? She said "The dentist took an x-ray and said there was a hairline crack in one of her teeth." I asked her, "What did you do about it"? She said, she didn't do anything. The Dentist told her that she had two choices, one was, she could have it pulled. The other one was she could have a root canal done.

I said to her, why don't we pray over it. She said to me, "Will you pray for me"? I said, "Sure." I laid my hand on the side of her face and prayed in the Spirit for a minute or so. Then I spoke words, saying something like this, "In the Name of Jesus I command this tooth to be whole. I command healing in this tooth in Jesus's Name. Thank you Jesus. It is done."

A week or so later I met her again and I asked her how her tooth was. She told me she did not have any pain since I prayed for her. A year or so later I asked her again, "How is you tooth, have you ever had any pain in it since last year"? She said, "It's fine, I haven't had any pain since you prayed for it a year or so ago."

Why did the pain leave when I prayed for her tooth? Mainly, because the Holy Spirit was in agreement with the prayer. I made sure it was not me praying alone. I made sure the Holy Spirit was in on what was happening when I prayed. If the Holy Spirit was not in on it, nothing would have happened. Jesus said, "It is the spirit that quickeneth..." (John 6:63). If the Holy Spirit is not in on it, Christians can do all the speaking and praying they want and nothing will happen.

Christians must have the right attitude when they pray. Christians need to understand, of ourselves we can do nothing. Spirits are controlled by the Word of God, the power of the Holy Spirit and the Blood of Jesus (1 John 5:8). If God is not involved, we are no different than those who are not Christians. The world does not have the power of God to stand against the works of the Devil. Only Christians have that authority. But the authority only works when we are doing the will of God the way Jesus taught us according to the written Word of God.

Christians who take the glory for themselves will find that many times the Word will not work for them. God will not share His Glory with someone else, not even Christians. Jesus must receive the glory, otherwise the Holy Spirit will not manifest the works of God in their lives.

Even Jesus would not receive the glory for what He did while here on earth. Jesus gave God the Glory. When Jesus prayed for Lazarus in John 11:41,42. It says, "And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me....And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me."

Jesus knew His Father would answer His prayer, because Jesus never did His own will of the flesh. He only did the will of God the Father. When Christians stop trying to do their own will of the flesh, and give all the glory to God, they will also see the manifestation of their prayers being answered.

What seems to be sad today is that a lot of Christians are speaking words without knowledge. They see what is happening in the world, and they speak death instead of life. They speak words that are spirit, but they are not words of life, they are words of death.

Words are spirit, and they control what spirits do. Jesus was very careful about the Words that He spoke. When Jesus spoke to His disciples in John 6:63 He made sure He was speaking words of life and not words of death.

When Christians go around telling others about all the sicknesses and diseases they have in their bodies, they are speaking words of death, not words of life. They are helping the Devil keep sickness and disease in their bodies. God cannot help them while they are helping the Devil.

Christians must come into agreement with the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, and the Blood of Jesus. Then God can help them. Back in Isaiah 33:24 it says, "And the inhabitant shall not say, I am sick: the people that dwell therein shall be forgiven their iniquity." Christians are not to say "I am sick." Christians should be speaking what the Word of God says about sickness and disease. The Word of God says, "By His stripes we are healed" (Isa. 53:5).

The Devil controls the world by "the tree of knowledge of good and evil" (Gen. 2:16,17, 3:17). By the tree of knowledge of good and evil, Satan convinces Christians that to declare the Word of God over circumstances in the natural is a lie. The Devil is a liar himself. He is the father of lies (John 8:44).

There are two truths mentioned in the Bible. One is what the Devil calls truth (by the tree of knowledge of good and evil), which is called natural truth (truth according to the natural realm). By this natural truth the Devil causes circumstances to manifest by the words people speak.

If the Devil can get people to believe it is a lie to "speak those things that be not as thought they were" (Rom. 4:17), then he can prevent them from coming into agreement with the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, and the Blood of Jesus (1 John 5:8).

The other truth is Jesus Christ Himself (John 14:6). "The Word of God" is the real Truth (John 17:17). The Word of God is a "spiritual truth," which can only be operated by the Holy Spirit, the Word of God and the Blood of Jesus working in agreement with each other.

By the tree of knowledge of good and evil the Devil convinces people that what they see with their eyes, feel in their bodies, experience in their lives is truth. That is not true. What many people see with their eyes, feel in their bodies, and experience in their lives is sometimes a work of the Devil, not of God. Fear is a work of the Devil in the minds of people (2 Tim. 1:17). The love of God casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).

When Christians learn to be led by the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:14), walk after the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1-8), walk and live by faith and not by sight (Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:38), they will know the truth and the truth will set them free.

In the world there is the natural man, which Satan has a lot of control over (Eph. 2:2,3). Then there is the spiritual man, in which the LORD has control. If we walk after the flesh we will be subject to the flesh. If we walk after the Spirit we will be subject to the Holy Spirit. It is when we are led by the Holy Spirit and walk after the Holy Spirit that we have the authority of God working in our lives to overcome all the works of the Devil.

When we live by faith and not by sight, the power of God will manifest in our lives. We will be free of the works of the Devil. That doesn't mean we will not face the circumstances that the world faces. Jesus said, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

We are in the world. We all face the works of the Devil every day. But, if we try to face the Devil by our own ability, we will be overtaken by the works of the Devil. But, if we walk after the Spirit and are led by the Spirit and walk by faith and not by sight, then we can have victory over the works of the Devil.

Sin causes the manifestation of the works of the Devil in our lives. Therefore, 1 John 1:6-8 tells us, "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:...But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin....If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." We must maintain our fellowship with the Father and the Son so that the Holy Spirit can manifest the Word of God in our lives.

We must not give the Devil any help by speaking words that do not agree with the written Word of God. When we do not speak according to what is written, we give place for the Devil in our lives. Many Christians go about speaking words, that may be words that did not come from God. They could be words that they received in their mind, thinking it was God. This is not good to say the least.
